“When I was first asked to join the Home Builders Association I couldn't understand why I would want to meet with my competitors. Now, having joined, I realize that the other HBA members are not my competitors. They deal with the same issues and problems I face everyday. Government over regulation, fly-by-night contractors, taxes, insurance and employee issues are just a few. Now those same competitors are my friends, people I rely on when I need advice or just need someone I can talk to who understands what I may be going through at a particular time.

“I belong to the Home Builders Association of New Haven County because it gives me many opportunities. Opportunity to learn more about the industry, to meet other builders and remodelors and share our knowledge. Opportunity to attend educational seminars and learn more about our industry. I am a "builder" member of the association as we remodel homes and build additions. I both compete with other remodelors and can count on them as friends and mentors. We have received referrals from other members who either don't do the type of projects we do or the project is too big or small for them to do efficiently, and have also referred work to other members as well. We have also subcontracted to other builder and associate members as well as subcontracting from other members. Being a member also gives me the opportunity to meet "associate" and builder members at our monthly meetings where we share information on industry trends and new advancements and products. "Associate" members are those who provide goods and/or services to the industry.  I have been able to learn about and be involved in  how our government works by joining the government affairs committee and attending "Builders day at the capital.”
